Information about symposium

The use of primary care databases such as the General Practice Research Database and The Health Improvement Network has increased dramatically over recent years, with major focus areas including disease aetiology, epidemiology of a wide range of illnesses including infectious diseases and the investigation of the effects of drugs in large populations. High quality primary care data with the ever expanding availability of linked secondary data sources means a rich resource for investigators is now available.
This expansion in data resources has led to a substantial body of work in determining the best ways of using the data to arrive at valid answers.  The symposium will appeal to researchers experienced in the use of primary care data and will address currently debated general and specific methodological questions. Topics to be covered in the symposium include:

  • Use of data linkages
  • Analysis of time trends
  • Propensity scores
  • Adverse drug reaction signal detection
  • Handling missing data
  • The self-controlled case series
  • Conducting randomised controlled trials in databases
  • Unmeasured confounding
A half day workshop on the second day will also allow attendees to contribute to the development of specific guidelines for reporting the results of database studies (an extension of the STROBE guidelines).
