Research Mapping Exercise

In order to estimate the extent of infectious disease research in the UK an analysis of the National Research Register was undertaken.  The analysis has focussed on projects initiated in 2003 and the first 6 months of 2004.

If data from this 18 month period are representative then:-

  • More than 500 infectious disease research projects are initiated each year
  • Around 30% of these projects have no recorded funding source and in a further 20% the amount of funding is not stated.
  • Amongst funded projects the median direct funding is £16 504 and the mean was £103 179
  • The annual spend on infectious disease related research is at least £35 million.
  • The annual costs to the NHS (Service Support Costs) are at least £7 million

The breakdown of funding by region, funder and topic is shown in the images below.

For a written breakdown of the research in each topic (in Microsoft Word format), please scroll down or click here.

Details of the projects identified by year initiated and topic area, and sub-categorised by region, can be downloaded below.

(If a project is focused on more than one area of research, e.g. tuberculosis and HIV, it will be included in all relevant categories.)
