Infection prevention in hospitals
16 May 2008
BioPark Hertfordshire , Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

The Department of Health has set out a strategy called “Towards cleaner hospitals and lower rates of infection programme”. This programme “sets out a strategy to improve hospital cleanliness and tackle healthcare associated infections. Key elements include empowering patients and the public, the matron's charter, independent inspection and learning from the best. In this forum infection prevention, control and research into this within hospitals will be discussed.”

Infectious Diseases: Problems and Challenges
18 June 2008
Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

This symposium has been designed to provide informed, contemporary and relevant information on some areas of current interest in infectious diseases.

Zoonoses continue to be a very important and often misunderstood area of infection. The morning sessions will cover topical issues and recent developments in both the challenges of diagnosis and management of three important zoonoses; Q fever, lyme borreliosis and rabies.

The afternoon session provides a forum to continue the discussion and debate on areas of infection management that are of high prominence both politically and in the public arena. We are delighted to welcome world renowned experts in the management of serious sepsis and fungal infection and will have the opportunity to discuss these subjects alongside the challenges of healthcare acquired infection, particularly MRSA, and antimicrobial resistance. The session is designed to allow audience participation with interactive discussion of relevant case studies, calling upon the expert advice available.

Introduction to Infectious Disease Modelling and its Applications 2008
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
14-25th July 2008

This two-week intensive course is intended to introduce professionals working on infectious diseases in either developing or developed countries to this exciting and expanding area. The emphasis will be on developing a conceptual understanding of the basic methods and on their practical application, rather than the manipulation of mathematical equations. The methods will be illustrated by "hands-on" experience of setting up models in spreadsheets as well as other specialist modelling packages, small group work, and seminars in which the applications of modelling will be discussed. By the end of the course participants will have gained an understanding and practical experience of the basics of infections disease modelling which will be useful in their future work.

Introduction to Mathematical Models of the Epidemiology & Control of Infectious Diseases
1-12 September 2008
Imperial College London

Since 1990, this short course has 'demystified' mathematical modelling, and kept public-health professionals, policy makers, and medical and veterinary researchers, up-to-date with what they need to know about this fast-moving field. It is taught by active researchers in the world-leading Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology , which advises public health agencies, governments, international organisations, and pharmaceutical companies, and hosts the MRC Centre for Outbreak Analysis & Modelling, UNAIDS Epidemiology Reference Group secretariat, Partnership for Child Development, and the Gates Foundation-funded Schistosomiasis Control Initiative that has treated over 12 million children to date in six countries in Africa.

Participants need only a very basic mathematical ability (high school level is more than sufficient): most course participants do not use maths regularly, and calculation is done using Excel and the user-friendly modelling package, Berkeley Madonna; hence manipulation of equations is not required. We offer an optional 'maths refresher' day on Sunday 31 August, free of charge.

This programme will be of interest worldwide to public health professionals, policy makers, health economists, commissioning agencies, immunologists, medical, veterinary, biological and pharmaceutical scientists.

The plenary and symposium sessions will be presented by the world's leading experts in each of these fields. In addition, proffered oral and poster sessions will be an integral part of the programme and all delegates are invited to submit abstracts. Workshops and Industry breakfast and lunch symposia are also planned.
